Gary was born in Camden, London to Sri Lankan parents. He graduated from the Oxford School of Drama in 1993 and later that year made his professional stage debut at the Manchester Royal Exchange in The Moonstone directed by the late James Maxwell, cast alongside Struan Rodger, Helen Atkinson-Wood and Raad Rawi. The following year he then went on to work on new writing projects for the Royal Court, National Theatre Studio and Tara Arts. In 1995 he played Bratucio in the highly acclaimed production of Don Juan at the BAC, directed by the late James Menzies-Kitchen and would return to BAC in 1998 for Tom Morris’ production of Oedipus as part of the ground breaking “playing in the dark” season with Tam Dean Burn in the title role. His first collaboration with Asif Kapadia began in 1996 when he played the lead in the short film The Waiting Room, he continued to work with Asif on The Sheep Thief, The Warrior and the soon to be released feature film Far North in which he plays Ivar, alongside Michelle Yeoh, Sean Bean and Michelle Krusiec. In 1997 Gary worked with Thomas Ostermeier at the Royal Court and then later starred in a national tour of Staying On alongside Richard Johnson, Prunella Scales and Sayeed Jaffrey. At a time (1998) when Asian actors were not often seen in classical theatre the innovative casting of Paul Kerryson saw him begin an eight year period of stage work at the Leicester Haymarket where he starred in twelve productions, including Richard III with Janet Henfrey, The White Devil with Gabrielle Drake, Macbeth with Craig Conway and Sasha Behar, An Ideal Husband alongside James Murray, and Death of A Salesman alongside Joseph Marcell. During this time he also starred in both critically acclaimed and hugely successful touring productions of Unsuitable Girls for Contact Theatre and Pilot Theatre, playing opposite Shelley Conn and Majinder Virk. More recently Gary played Mohmoud Ali in Nancy Mekler’s production of A Passage To India for Shared Experience in London and New York with Fenella Woolgar playing Adela Quested. In 2007 he was cast in the title role of Krishna in the Sadler’s Wells production of Mahabharata, where he received much critical acclaim and this year (2008) Gary recently finished playing Friar Francis in Much Ado About Nothing at the National Theatre, directed by Nicholas Hytner with Simon Russell Beale and Zoë Wannamaker. In his career to date, Gary has worked on many television productions including the BBC production Choices directed by Alrick Riley; the critically acclaimed Men Only with Marc Warren, Martin Freeman and Marianne Jean-Baptiste directed by Peter Webber, the American series Adventure Inc with Michael Biehn. More recently he played Dr Ramesh in the hard hitting Mysterious Creatures alongside Rebekah Staton, Timothy Spall and Brenda Blethyn. In 2007 Gary played Marc Brisco in the Torchwood episode They Keep Killing Suzie and this year Gary starred in the BBC/HBO series The Passion alongside Joseph Mawle. During this time Gary collaborated with San Francisco based musician Paul Webber who asked him to appear on his new album Sago; he features on the track The Disappearing Me. This year (2008) Gary can be seen playing Ivar alongside Michelle Yeoh in Asif Kapadia’s new feature Far North, which will be released in December and in 2009 you can catch him in Franklyn, Gerald McMorrow’s debut feature, alongside Eva Green. |
